It's easy to overlook accessibility if you’ve never had to think about it. Once you do, the way you see the world changes. And it's full of obstacles.
Many in our community face a range of accessibility challenges, and it's often tough for event organizers to find venues that accommodate everyone. Compromises are sometimes unavoidable, that’s not the goal of this pledge.
I can't take credit for the idea. It was inspired by a BearScots post simply listing the accessibility features of their venues. It made me think: What if every event did that? And shouldn’t we recognize the ones that do?
If I earn your support to be Mr. Bear Europe, I want to encourage event organizers to keep accessibility in mind. Ideally, that means choosing accessible venues. But at the very least, I’ll invite them to share clear accessibility info on their websites, so people can plan ahead or make informed choices.
I also want to track these efforts and gather feedback from those who benefit. And at next year’s Mr. Bear Europe election, I’d love to spotlight the most inclusive events, and maybe offer some kind of award. So, are you in?
What info could you share? Anything, really. You might not think it’s relevant, but it can help someone. Some examples:
Space on the tickets page or event schedule can be tight, but always include a clear note that extended accessibility info is available on your website.
Create a dedicated accessibility page that covers every venue and activity. Include details like physical access, toilet facilities, sensory-friendly spaces, transport options, and any support services available. Add photos, maps, or floor plans if you can, visuals help a ton. Keep the info clear, up-to-date, and easy to navigate so attendees can find what they need quickly.
Alongside ticket sales, in confirmation emails, and on social media, use links to direct people to your accessibility page. Consider adding QR codes to printed schedules or posters so attendees can quickly access details on their phones.
Encourage attendees to share feedback on accessibility to improve future events and make everyone feel truly welcome. Remember, clear, open communication helps everyone plan better and creates a more inclusive experience.
So, will you take the pledge? Let me know! I’d love to see what you come up with, and I’ll be happy to share it. Let’s make bear events welcoming for everyone!
As part of my campaign for Mr Bear Europe 2025, I’m giving away a box of Pokémon cards, pins, and a signed CD of "Celestial" by Ed Sheeran to raise funds for two bear organisations that both my partner and I are members of: Bangsafélagið (organisers of RVKBear) and Bears of Poland. I chose to organise this through Raffall, a platform specialising in raffles, so everything is legal and out of my hands—including the selection of a winner. As part of their system, you will need to answer an easy question (I chose one related to the European Union) when you buy tickets. The proceeds will be divided equally between Bangsafélagið and Bears of Poland (after Raffall’s 15% cut and deducting enough to cover the postage of the prize) through a donation platform called Benevity, which will allow my company to match the donation and provide as much support as possible to both associations. I will be as transparent as possible with all the numbers throughout the whole process, but please be patient, as it’s my first time organising something like this. That said, I hope you participate and wish you good luck!
